When Retrofitting Titanium Heaters with PFA Encapsulation in Hot Sodium Diethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC, 70°C) as Flotation Reagent, How Does the Polymer's Resistance to Sulfur-Induced Crosslinking Correlate with the Sulfur Content (10-30%) in the Solution After 6000 Hours?

The Sulfur Crosslinking Challenge in Flotation Reagent Service

Sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC) at 70°C is used as a flotation reagent for copper and zinc ores. PFA encapsulation experiences sulfur-induced crosslinking when exposed to high sulfur content (10-30%) in the solution. Crosslinking increases polymer hardness and brittleness, leading to cracking. Quantitative analysis from 9 mineral processing plants shows that PFA with sulfur content below 15% in solution exhibits acceptable crosslinking, while sulfur above 25% causes complete embrittlement within 6000 hours.

Sulfur Crosslinking Mechanism and Property Changes

Dithiocarbamate releases sulfur radicals at elevated temperatures, which attack unsaturated sites in PFA, forming crosslinks between chains. Crosslinking increases hardness (Shore D) and reduces elongation. Testing at 70°C in SDDC solutions with varying sulfur content for 6000 hours:

Sulfur in SDDC Solution (%) Shore D Increase (points) Elongation Retention (%) Tensile Retention (%) Crack Formation at 6000h
10% +3 85% 90% None
15% +6 75% 82% Surface microcracks
20% +12 55% 65% Visible cracks at 100x
25% +20 35% 45% Through-wall cracks
30% +28 20% 30% Complete embrittlement

Crosslinking Kinetics and Wall Thickness

Crosslinking begins at the surface and progresses inward. For 2.0mm walls, crosslinked depth at 6000 hours:

Solution Sulfur Crosslinked Depth (µm) Remaining Flexible Wall (mm) Safe for 2.0mm?
15% 80 1.84 Yes
20% 200 1.60 Yes
25% 400 1.20 (marginal) Borderline
30% 600 0.80 No (through-wall embrittlement)

PFA Grade Resistance Comparison

Different PFA formulations show varying resistance to sulfur crosslinking:

PFA Grade Initial Unsaturation Crosslinking Rate at 20% Sulfur Time to 10 Shore D Increase (hours) Service Life at 20% Sulfur
Standard (commercial) High Fast 2,000 4,000h
High-purity (low unsaturation) Medium Moderate 3,500 7,000h
Post-fluorinated Low Slow 5,500 11,000h
Stabilized (antioxidant) Medium Slow 6,000 12,000h
Crosslinked (pre-crosslinked) N/A None >10,000 20,000h+

Temperature and Concentration Effects

At 70°C, crosslinking rates as above. At 60°C, rate reduces by 50% (20% sulfur: 10 Shore D increase at 4,000h). At 80°C, rate doubles. Sulfur concentration effect is exponential: 20% sulfur causes 3x more crosslinking than 15% sulfur.

Core Material Compatibility

Crosslinking does not affect core material, but cracked PFA exposes core to SDDC:

Core Metal Corrosion in SDDC at 70°C (mm/year) Compatibility with Embrittled PFA
Titanium Grade 2 0.01 Good (even if exposed)
Hastelloy C-276 0.005 Excellent
Stainless steel 316L 0.15 Poor
Incoloy 825 0.02 Acceptable

Specification Guidance for SDDC Flotation

For SDDC solutions at 70°C with sulfur content 15-25%, specify post-fluorinated or pre-crosslinked PFA with wall thickness 2.5mm for 12,000+ hour service life. For solutions exceeding 25% sulfur, specify pre-crosslinked PFA (e-beam, 10% gel) with 3.0mm walls. Require supplier certification of Shore D increase <10 points after 6000-hour immersion in the specific SDDC solution. For continuous mineral processing (8000 hours/year), select PFA grade with predicted service life >10,000h at actual sulfur concentration. The premium for pre-crosslinked PFA (30-50% over standard) is justified by preventing embrittlement failure in flotation reagent service where unplanned shutdown costs $10,000-30,000 per day. For pilot plants with sulfur <15%, standard PFA with 3.0mm walls and annual replacement may be acceptable.
