The Center Column Obstacle
Many process tanks have the center overflow column-the vertical standpipe in the tank center that sets the liquid level and carries the overflow to the drain. The standpipe occupies the tank center, the area where the heat exchanger would naturally be centered. The heat exchanger must fit around the standpipe, leaving the clear space for the overflow flow.
The custom PTFE frame is designed as the ring or the C-shape that wraps around the standpipe. The frame holds the tube bundle in the annular or the arc-shaped configuration around the column, maximizing the surface area in the remaining tank space.
The Annular Frame Design
The tank is circular, 2,400mm diameter, with the center standpipe of 300mm diameter. The PTFE heat exchanger frame is the annular ring: the inner edge at the 200mm clearance from the standpipe, the outer edge at the 150mm clearance from the tank wall. The ring width is 800mm.
The tube bundle is arranged as the radial or the circumferential pattern within the ring. The circumferential pattern-the tubes running in the circles around the standpipe-provides the uniform heating around the column. The radial pattern-the tubes extending from the inner ring to the outer ring-is the alternative for the simpler fabrication.
The frame is fabricated in the 4-6 segments that pass through the tank manway. The segments are joined inside the tank with the PTFE flanged connections. The segments are the identical arc shapes, simplifying the fabrication and the inventory.

The Overflow Flow Compatibility
The center overflow column carries the liquid downward. The heat exchanger frame around the column must not obstruct the overflow flow. The inner clearance of 200mm provides the annular flow path for the overflow. The tube bundle elevation is below the overflow weir-the tubes are submerged, and the overflow flows above the bundle. The design ensures the overflow and the heating coexist without the interference.
The Support and Stability
The annular frame is supported by the legs resting on the tank floor. The legs are the PTFE pads that distribute the weight. The frame's annular shape provides the inherent stability-the wide footprint resists the tipping. The buoyancy is countered by the PTFE weights integrated into the frame structure.
The standpipe provides the additional lateral support: the PTFE guide shoes on the frame's inner edge bear against the standpipe, preventing the lateral movement. The guide shoes are the replaceable wear elements.
