PFA coated heaters and titanium heating tubes are two mainstream anti-corrosion heating products widely used in harsh chemical environments. Many purchasers confuse the applicable scenarios of the two materials and make improper selection, which leads to shortened service life or excessive procurement cost. This article systematically compares their corrosion resistance, mechanical performance, temperature resistance, cost, installation adaptability and maintenance characteristics to clarify their respective applicable boundaries.
In terms of medium corrosion resistance, PFA has broader universal adaptability. It can stably resist almost all strong inorganic acids, mixed acids, hydrofluoric acid, strong alkalis and most organic solvents, with almost no chemical reaction. Titanium has excellent performance in seawater, brine, chloride-containing solutions and oxidizing acids, but it is severely corroded by hydrofluoric acid, concentrated hot hydrochloric acid and high-concentration reducing acid. Once these media appear, titanium tubes will fail rapidly, while PFA still works normally.
Regarding temperature upper limit, PFA continuous working temperature ranges from 200℃ to 260℃, and it will soften and deform if exceeding the limit for a long time. Industrial pure titanium can withstand long-term use below 350℃, with outstanding high-temperature mechanical stability, and is more suitable for high-temperature heating processes above 200℃.
Mechanical strength and anti-collision performance differ obviously. Titanium is metal material with high tensile strength and hardness, resistant to extrusion, collision and strong liquid scouring, not easy to damage during transportation and installation. PFA is a fluoroplastic coating on metal substrate; the outer coating is prone to scratches, peeling and pinhole damage once collided by hard objects, which will directly cause substrate corrosion and heater scrappage. Therefore, in equipment with frequent vibration, high flow impact and rough on-site operation, titanium has obvious advantages.
Structure and installation flexibility: PFA heaters can be made into spiral coils, L-shape, U-shape, flange integrated structure with ultra-customized size, suitable for irregular electroplating tanks and small reaction kettles. Titanium tubes are mostly straight tube or simple bent structures; complex spiral winding processing difficulty is high and cost surges, so customized special-shaped products are less economical.
Cost difference is the core factor affecting selection. Under the same power and specification, the unit price of conventional PFA heaters is only 1/3 to 1/2 of titanium heating tubes. For large-volume tank heating projects, PFA can greatly reduce one-time investment. Titanium has a higher initial price, but its service life is extremely long in seawater and brine without mechanical damage, with fewer replacement times in the whole life cycle.
Maintenance and later replacement: Damaged PFA coating can be partially repaired with special repair glue and hot melting process for emergency use. Titanium tubes cannot be repaired after local corrosion perforation and must be replaced directly.
Table 1 Comprehensive Comparison Between PFA Heaters and Titanium Heating Tubes
表格
| Comparison Item | PFA Coated Anti-Corrosion Heater | Titanium Electric Heating Tube |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion Spectrum | All acids, alkalis, HF, organic solvents | Excellent against chloride, invalid for HF & reducing acid |
| Max Long-Term Temp | 200~260℃ | ≤350℃ |
| Mechanical Shock Resistance | Weak, easy to scratch coating | Strong, anti-collision and anti-scour |
| Customized Shape | Highly flexible, spiral/L/U/flange types | Limited forming, high cost for complex shapes |
| Relative Purchase Cost | Low (baseline 1) | High (2~3 times of PFA) |
| Repairability | Local repair available | Non-repairable after leakage |
| Best Applicable Scenario | Electroplating, mixed acid, HF-containing waste liquid | Seawater desalination, marine platform, brine heating |
To sum up, choose PFA when facing diverse complex corrosive media and budget control; choose titanium for chloride-rich environment, high temperature and severe mechanical impact conditions.
