Corrosion inhibitor is an economical auxiliary means to delay the deterioration of 316 stainless steel heating tubes in circulating water and chemical process mediums. It does not need to replace equipment materials or modify equipment structure, and can effectively slow down pitting, crevice corrosion and microbial corrosion by adding trace chemical agents into the medium. This paper introduces the classification, anti-corrosion principle and applicable restrictions of common inhibitors.

1. Basic Anti-Corrosion Mechanism

316 stainless steel relies on the natural chromium oxide passive film for protection. When chloride ions and acidic substances in the medium erode the film, local corrosion begins to expand. Corrosion inhibitors mainly work in three ways:

Adsorption type: Molecules adsorb on the metal surface to form a dense organic isolation film, blocking the contact between corrosive ions and the substrate;

Passivation type: Promote the rapid repair and thickening of the original passive film, improve the stability of Cr₂O₃ oxide layer against chloride intrusion;

Precipitation type: Combine with metal ions or medium ions to form insoluble sediment covering the tube surface, covering tiny pitting points and gap areas to prevent further corrosion.

2. Main Classification and Applicable Scenarios

(1) Chromate Passivation Inhibitors

Strong oxidizing property can rapidly form a thick and compact passive film on stainless steel, with excellent effect on suppressing pitting and crevice corrosion. Disadvantages: High toxicity, strict environmental discharge restrictions, most industrial production lines have been phased out and replaced by environmental protection formulas.

(2) Nitrite & Molybdate Inhibitors

Molybdate belongs to environmentally friendly anodic inhibitor. It assists chromium element to reconstruct passive film when the original oxide layer is damaged, significantly improving the critical pitting resistance of 316 in low-concentration chloride circulating water. Suitable for closed circulating cooling water systems; invalid in strong acid and high-temperature open systems.

(3) Organic Adsorption Inhibitors (imidazoline, amine derivatives)

Mainly used in acidic pickling medium and reducing environment. The polar group of organic molecules is firmly adsorbed on the metal surface to form a hydrophobic protective layer, reducing the dissolution rate of stainless steel matrix in dilute acid. Not suitable for long-term heating of drinking water and food-grade liquid due to chemical residue risk.

(4) Scale & Corrosion Dual-Purpose Composite Agents

Commonly used in cooling circulating water, containing dispersant + inhibitor components. While inhibiting calcium and magnesium scaling to eliminate crevice corrosion induced by dirt, it weakens the electrochemical corrosion reaction of the metal surface. It is the most widely used type in central heating and industrial circulating water.

3. Key Limitations That Cannot Be Ignored

Inhibitors only slow down the corrosion rate and cannot completely prevent corrosion. When chloride ion concentration exceeds the tolerance threshold of 316 material, the protective effect will fail rapidly.

The dosing concentration has a strict effective range. Too low dosage cannot form a continuous protective film; excessive dosage may cause salting-out precipitation and form new fouling deposits.

Frequent medium replacement or large water replenishment will continuously dilute the agent concentration, requiring regular online monitoring and supplementary dosing, otherwise the anti-corrosion effect will disappear.

In hydrofluoric acid, concentrated hydrochloric acid and strong alkali media, conventional inhibitors have almost no obvious effect and cannot replace PFA coating or titanium material upgrade.

4. Standard Supporting Use Specifications

Clean the pipeline and heating tube thoroughly before adding the agent to remove old scale and sludge, otherwise the inhibitor cannot contact the effective metal surface;

Regularly detect medium chloride content, pH value and inhibitor residual concentration to dynamically adjust the addition amount;

Cooperate with periodic drainage and water quality softening treatment to reduce the source of corrosive impurities fundamentally.

表格

Inhibitor Type Core Advantage Main Restriction
Molybdate System Low toxicity, strengthen passive film Invalid under high Cl⁻ and strong acid
Organic Adsorption Type Good effect in weak acid medium Not allowed for food & pharmaceutical liquids
Composite Circulating Water Agent Anti-scaling + anti-corrosion dual function Need continuous dosing management
Chromate Formula Excellent anti-corrosion performance Toxic, environmentally restricted

Conclusion

Corrosion inhibitors are a cost-effective auxiliary anti-corrosion method for conventional 316 heating equipment. However, it can only serve as a supplementary means of water quality management. For harsh corrosive working conditions with high chloride, strong acid and hydrofluoric acid, material upgrading remains the most reliable fundamental solution.
